This week I read A Northern Light by Jennifer Donnelly. This book is set in 1906 and the main character, Mattie, hopes to go to New York to become a writer. However, her father won't allow her because he has already lost his wife and son. Therefore, Mattie must make the choice of marrying a boy who's dream is to own a farm or set off to conquer her own dreams.
A Northern Light was better than I expected. It was an interesting mix of historical fiction, mystery, and romance. The plot and setting were full of little details that made the book set itself apart from other historical fiction novels. The characters were also developed into different, and better, people throughout the story. The author created realistic characters who's voices sounded as that of their age. This made the novel truly stand out as a novel of a girl's quest to discover herself and to make the choices that will alter her future.
The best book I read so far this year was probably Delirium by Lauren Oliver. It was a fantastic book about a dystopian world where the government orders people to go under a brain treatment that removes a person's ability to love. It has amazing characters and an interesting plot. Including Delirium, I've read about 90 to a 100 books this year.
Well, heyy there, Emmy!
ReplyDeleteYour book sounds amazing and I just might read it. That is, if I EVER finish my forty books... hehe. Maybe I'll even read Delirium? Who knows. I enjoyed Before I Fall, and that was by the same author, right? I think so. I like the way your writing flows. It creates an illusion that you are really speaking to me. ;) hahaha. So, are you super duper pumped for reading team tomorrow?!? Let's just say, you owe me. Big time. And what do we have to bring for that thing, anyway? I'm soooo confused. Help me? :D
